You know, all the time Shirone spend practicing the sword has really not paid off huh. Like sure would be nice if you carried a sword and had continued your sword practice, but you sure did just dumped it at the drop of a hat.
From the beginning his intention was to become a mage and only that, he never even bothered to go too deep into schema and instead just did his best with his spirit zone since the intention of that arc was to introduce Shirone as a character to us, showing how he’s clever and always does his best with what he has at hand.
Also, they introduced the question of “Swordsman vs Mage” as an introduction for a later arc right after the duel thingy, so i don’t think it would’ve made sense for Shirone to also learn the sword as it would’ve invalidated the question
